We had a break-in today at our neighbours. Two of our neighbours had their front door locks broken and stuff stolen from them. The fuckers didn't enter one of the apartments because they probably heard their big mean dog growling inside. My for was scratched to as they tried to force it but couldn't since I had a dead bolt on the door. I wonder what would happen if I was home and they were able to break the door in. There was a murder recently in Austin where the guy at home was killed by thieves. I don't have a gun and I don't think it'll be of much use anyway if I was eating lunch and watching to gear. Kinda morbid but it does make you realise how quickly things can turn for the worse even in your reasonably safe home. Stay safe, lock your doors and keep alarms at the ready!

Sounds like a big barking dog might be better than a gun. :)

Because when seconds count, ADT is only minutes away from calling the police.

Where I live we have on average 100+ breakins over a three month period.
but they don't mess with my shit.
Here is why.
Whoever is doing it is either terrified of me. Or respects me in some way.
My cars are never broken into, my house is left untouched while the neighbors have stuff stolen all the time.
I sitll worry that one night I'll wake up to someoen coming into my house.
And one night I was awoken by someoen kicking my door in.
I got up, opened the door with a baseball bat in hand and they scurried away.

I'd get a big, loud dog and arm it just to be sure. Can't be too safe!

Daytime burglars rarely look for confrontation. Some amount of casing is normal in residential burgs and they want people out of the house before committing these crimes. I know it's little comfort, because that sense of security gets shattered fast.

lucky for your deadbolt hey.
I've been robbed a couple of times, both times while I was out of town.
The first time they took my housemates computer monitor but left the 50" TV, multiple games consoles and home theatre equipment. They ate our ice cream and left the freezer open. We were insured so my housemate got a better monitor and we got a $10 cheque to buy new frozen goods.
and more recently another group busted open my garage while I was away and took my $50 craigslist bike and left my housemates $3k road bike.
Junkies are either dumb or really smart.

I had someone attempt a break-in on my house once while I was out of the house. I found a perfectly round hole cut in one of my front windows with a big crack running up the glass of the window from the hole. Lucky for me, I had this lovely lady watching my home for me:
80 lbs of very loyal German Giant Schnauzer. She was much younger when the break-in attempt happened. I've surmised that she heard the commotion and started barking. If you've ever heard one of these dogs barking you know they aren't to be messed with. Very loud, thunderous dogs. I miss her so much, may she R.I.P. I have another but he's got his own shoes to fill; he can never fill hers.
Lucky you were proactive in upping the security of your home. Are you going to do anything different/make any changes now that you've had the break-in attempt(s)? Chances are very ( very ) low that the same idiots would try again but that doesn't mean someone else might come along and try. There's a quote I heard, "the arrogance of success is to think that what we did yesterday is good enough for tomorrow."

Allow me to introduce my editing axe and my stairs bowie. Handy, because when you need one, you typically don't have the time to go looking. Handle on the axe isn't finished yet, sorry it looks a bit rough. Need to pick up some black or bronze screws as well

I think a few throwing axes/tomahawks and shuriken might be just as useful. Can keep them on your person and you do not have to go searching for them while you're eating or on the throne :) A big rottweiler helps too I guess.

100+ in 3 months! That is insane! Do you guys have no increased police patrolling and stuff? Do all you guys have guns under your pillows :)

So sorry about your dog. She looks beautiful :)
More countermeasures for now - Additional deadbolt and maybe setup the alarms too. Dunno how effective they will be. Gotta talk to the apartment folks and see what they think about the effectiveness of the alarm. I may get myself a small camera and fix it facing the front door. So maybe that will help post-facto. Lets see. I've been trying to talk my wife into getting a dog. I think she might agree now :)

We live higher up and they stole a tv from a downstairs neighbour but just a purse from our neighbour on this floor. She was saying those idiots stole a cheap purse and not her coach bag ;)

It wouldn't be that hard set up a motion-activated camera that records for a few minutes when it detects any motion. You'd just have to have it linked to a computer that's always on and either deal with wires running to the computer or pay extra for a wireless (internet) model. The extra deadbolt is a smart idea. I don't know how much damage (if any) your current one took, but it can only help. I think the only big question you have to ask yourself about getting a dog is if you are ready to be tied down with the responsibility of taking care of one (being home for it to give it attention and letting it out, and vacation plans - kennels aren't exactly cheap. You do have to structure your life around them. I love my dogs and am have no regrets getting them, but it is a slight lifestyle change having them.
